Abstract
With the phenomenon of St. James’ Way, a plethora of routes of varying quality have emerged in Galician territory. The Heritage legislation has had to discern which of these routes are the right ones, with sufficient historical foundations to endow them with heritage status. Among them, the so-called Portuguese Way was made official by the Heritage Law of 2016. However, many nuances are sometimes left in the background, especially in current times, when the itinerary as a purely tourist element is prioritized over its worth as cultural reality. This study deals with two aspects that are considered essential within that cultural reality: the first has to do with the global nature of the Way (with all its subtleties) and what this route meant in the Middle Ages, for relationships among territories, etc. The second aspect intends to analyze its historical and artistic essence through a diachronic analysis of the monuments found in the Way. These are not considered as routes or milestones to visit, but as globalizing elements, in order to present the reality of this Heritage of Cultural Interest as part of a scenery which spans all periods of Galician art in the Middle Ages.
