Abstract
La contribución, con un título que podría ser enigmático y que se explica, pretende examinar cómo la escuela en Galicia se ha confrontado a lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX con el hecho de la existencia de una densa «cultura local» y una lengua, la gallega, de muy amplio uso social. La tesis general habla, en un primer momento, de que la lengua gallega no se constituyó a lo largo del Antiguo Régimen como «lengua de civilización», a pesar de haber sido con anterioridad un código escrito de notable prestigio y se explican e interpretan las razones de ello. En un segundo momento, se señala que la escuela de los dos últimos siglos interviene con fuerza en los procesos de nacionalización española, con general criterio uniformizador desde el punto de vista cultural y lingüístico, rechazando por ello el reconocimiento y la valoración positiva e integradora de otras manifestaciones culturales e idiomáticas, lo que en el caso gallego se traduce en prácticas formativas que a lo largo de unos 150 años contribuyeron, sobre todo, a la deslegitimación de la «cultura local» y de los usos lingüísticos ordinarios de los escolares. Al fin, se señala que esta actuación se ha venido modificando, sin embargo, a lo largo de las dos últimas décadas del siglo XX
The contribution, with a title that could be enigmatic and which is explained, aims to examine how teaching in Galicia, throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, has confronted the fact that there is a dense «local culture» and a language, namely Galician, which is widely used by society. First of all, the general thesis describes how the Galician language was not constituted as a «language of civilization» during the Former Regime, in spite of the fact that it had previously been a written code of outstanding prestige and the reasons for this are explained and interpreted. Secondly, the work explains that during the last two centuries the education system strongly participates in Spanish nationalization processes, the general criteria for which included cultural and linguistic standardization; consequently, the recognition or positive and integrating appraisal of any other cultural or linguistic demonstrations was rejected. In the case of Galicia, this brought about teaching practises, which lasted approximately 150 years and which contributed above all to the delegitimization of the «local culture» and of the school children’s normal linguistic uses. As a conclusion, the text explains that this situation however has slowly been changed over the last two decades of the 20th century
