En los orígenes de la observancia. Frades da prove vida en la Galicia medieval (Finales siglo XIV – finales siglo XV)

Abstract

Se analiza el nacimiento y evolución de un grupo de franciscanos reformadores conocidos como los frades da prove vida. Su objetivo es retornar a la pureza de la regla franciscana. En el breve período que transcurre desde 1389 a 1407 llevan a cabo siete fundaciones en Galicia y ocho en Portugal. Las fundaciones en dos reinos responden a la existencia del Cisma y a la diversa obediencia de Castilla (a Aviñón) y de Portugal (a Roma). Los primeros protagonistas documentados son fray Gonzalo Mariño, fray Diego Arias y fray Pedro Díaz. Son respaldados por las autoridades eclesiásticas locales que les facilitan el acceso a ermitas y capillas preexistentes. Se asientan en su entorno en pobres habitáculos, en zonas boscosas y solitarias, rememorando los primeros pasos de san Francisco de Asís y su Fraternitas. Cuentan también con apoyos procedentes de la hidalguía gallega y de la burguesía compostelana. Su pervivencia se mantiene hasta mediados del siglo XV, momento en que comienzan a sufrir las presiones de los observantes. A comienzos del XVI se integran en la Regular Observancia. Las estructuras materiales de estos eremitorios iniciales se renuevan con la elevación de pequeños monasterios y las capillas preexistentes se transforman en oratorios.

The birth and evolution of a group of Franciscan reformers known as the Frades da prove vida is analyzed. Its objective is to return to the purity of the Franciscan rule. In the short period that elapses from 1389 to 1407 they carry out seven foundations in Galicia and eight in Portugal. The foundations in two kingdoms respond to the existence of the Schism and to the different obedience of Castile (to Avignon) and of Portugal (to Rome). The first documented protagonists are Fray Gonzalo Mariño, Fray Diego Arias and Fray Pedro Díaz. They are supported by local ecclesiastical authorities that facilitate access to pre-existing hermitages and chapels. They settle in their surroundings in poor habitats, in wooded and lonely areas, recalling the first steps of Saint Francis of Assisi and his Fraternitas. They also have support from the Galician nobility and the Compostela bourgeoisie. Their survival continues until the middle of the 15th century, when they begin to suffer pressure from observers. At the beginning of the 16th century, they became part of the Regular Observance. The material structures of these initial hermitages are renewed with the elevation of small monasteries and the pre-existing chapels are transformed into oratories.
