Abstract
In theorizing about deviant behavior has been stated, with some frequency, the relationship between low self-concept and delinquent behavior, either because antisocial behavior acts as a clearingmechanism of the devalued self-empowerment (Kaplan, 1972), either because a high self-concept protects the individual against the potencial for crime (Reckless, 1961, 1967). Under this assumption, the present study sought to define what role does the self-concept in the development of antisocial and delinquent behavior. Thus, following a quasi-experimental methodology, we take two samples, one of 150 young offenders and another 150 children without antisocial and delinquent behaviour. It is applied to both populations the questionnaire Autoconcepto AFA-A (Musitu, García, y Gutiérrez, 1997). The results reported differences in self-concept mediated the population factor. Specifically, the population under reform is less developed, than the normative population, academic, social, emotional and family self-concept. In light of these findings is estimated that the self has to be processed in juvenile reform.
