Abstract
The gardens of Buen Retiro, in Madrid, are an emblematic green space with a rich and diverse history. Its historical-artistic evolution reflects changing trends and tastes over the centuries. Initially conceived, in the seventeenth century, as a recreational space for Spanish royalty, the gardens adopted the Baroque style, with elements such as statues, fountains and geometric flowerbeds. During the reign of Philip IV remarkable structures are built, which we conserve today, as the big pond. In the eighteenth century, with the arrival of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain with Philip V, changes were introduced inspired by the French style, with more symmetrical designs based on the ruler and compass, although retaining baroque elements and introducing the Rococo style. In the nineteenth century, during the reign of Elizabeth II, there is a major renovation under the influence of English landscaping, marked by the introduction of natural areas, winding paths and a greater integration of nature. In the twentieth century the garden underwent various transformations, including adaptation to different styles such as neoclassical and modernism. Today, the gardens of Buen Retiro continue to be an important tourist destination and a vital space for locals, fusing its rich history with the contemporary life of the city.
