El concepto de “sociedad civil”: breve historia de su elaboración teórica

Abstract

Por más que se le conjure y se le invoque en la actualidad, el concepto de “sociedad civil” suele permanecer bastante oscuro en lo que designa, signifi ca e implica. Para disipar tal oscuridad, es preciso esclarecer la teoría que lo ha impregnado en su origen y a lo largo de su desarrollo. Con este objeto, se ofrece una breve historia de su elaboración teórica. Tras el naturalismo de Aristóteles, se revisa el convencionalismo liberal de Hobbes, Locke y Ferguson, para terminar con las teorías alternativas de Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Marx y GramsciIn spite of its frequent uses at the present time, the concept of civil society suffers from a substantial obscurity in what it designates, signifi es and involves. In order to dissipate this obscurity, it is necessary to elucidate the theory that impregnates the concept in its source and along its evolution. With this purpose in mind, a short history of the theoretical elaboration of the concept of civil society is introduced. A number of theories are reviewed: the naturalism of Aristote and the conventionalism of Hobbes, Locke and Ferguson, as well as the alternative theories of Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Marx and Gramsci
