Abstract
España presenta desigualdades relevantes en el rendimiento académico, que derivan de un contexto socioeconómico diverso y de políticas regionales heterogéneas. Este estudio analiza cómo el agrupamiento escolar por rendimiento afecta a las desigualdades educativas intrarregionales. Para ello se introduce un uso alternativo del Propensity Score Matching que permite analizar si la implementación de esta política incrementa la desigualdad educativa en la región y si una mayor presencia implica un mayor incremento de las desigualdades. Los resultados señalan que esta política incrementa la desigualdad entre los estudiantes afectados por ella y que su mayor presencia conduce a un mayor incremento de la desigualdad educativa, especialmente en las regiones con un uso elevado del agrupamiento escolar.
Spain exhibits relevant educational inequalities in academic performance. These result from diverse socio-economic contexts and heterogeneous regional policies. This study examines how ability grouping based on performance influences intra-regional educational inequalities. To achieve this, an alternative use of Propensity Score Matching is introduced, allowing an analysis of whether the imple-mentation of this policy increases educational inequality in the regions and whether its greater prevalence corresponds to a higher inequalities increase. The findings indicate that ability grouping exacerbates in-equality among affected students and that a higher prevalence of the policy leads to a greater escalation of educational inequality, especially in regions with a high use of ability grouping.
