Item type: Item , Income Composition Inequality and Regional Heterogeneity: the Spanish Case(Springer, 2026-04-02) Amoedo, José Manuel; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)Income Composition Inequality (ICI) has emerged as a relevant framework for linking functional and personal income distribution, yet empirical evidence remains limited and focused exclusively on national-level analyses. This paper addresses this gap by offering the first comprehensive regional study of ICI in Spain over the period 2007–2021, a context characterised by pronounced territorial heterogeneity. Using microdata from the Income and Living Conditions Survey and a set of indicators capturing primary and secondary ICI, the article provides three main contributions. First, it demonstrates that ICI varies across regions and that neither its levels nor its patterns of change follow conventional geographical divides documented in the broader inequality literature. This reveals that regional disparities in income composition represent an independent dimension of territorial inequality that cannot be inferred from standard measures of income distribution. Second, the study shows that the concentration of individual income sources (particularly wages by education level, financial income and real estate income) plays a central role in explaining regional divergence, highlighting structural factors such as ageing, specialisation in tourism or exposure to gentrification. Third, the paper documents heterogeneous redistributive capacities across regions and identifies cases where high ICI persists even after transfers, underscoring the need for region-specific approaches to fiscal policy, housing policy and human-capital accumulation. Together, these contributions advance the understanding of ICI by revealing its relevance in contexts with strong regional heterogeneity and by establishing a methodological and empirical foundation for extending regional analyses of income composition to other countries.Item type: Item , Suche in Sandalen: Kreative Herausforderungen, um neue Lebensperspektiven zu entdecken(edition taberna kritika, 2026-04-09) Paloma, Laura; Soriano Gómez, Ezequiel; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Ciencias da Comunicación; Ackerly, Brooke A.; Cabrera, Luis; Deveaux, Monique; Forman, Fonna; Fuji Johnson, Genevieve; Starblanket, Gina; Wiener, AntjeVisual data is extremely mutable and open to interpretation, meaning that narratives located in and communicated through visual imagery on social media are contested. Their meaning is always in flux with some actors, notably social movement actors, attempting to ascribe particular narratives to visual images, and harness visual images to advance certain worldviews and arguments. This chapter uses the case of the California wildfires in 2020/2021 to explore how normative theory is grounded in empirical results and the tensions that arise when the data emerges from social movements attempting to shape narratives to supports their claims. It centers on the role of “facts” in the development of theory by drawing from the actions and discourse produced by actors on social media. By broadening and deepening the range of ideas, interests, and actors involved in anthropogenic climate change and visual communication, this chapter unearths previously hidden knowledge and facts, revealing narratives and discourses which inform societal understanding of climate crisis and extreme weather events such as wildfires.Item type: Item , El método científico y la investigación social(Tirant lo Blanch, 2026-02-05) Labora González, Juan José; Fernández Vilas, Enrique; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Ciencia Política e Socioloxía; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)Social acceleration and recurrent structural shocks increase habitus–field mismatch, yet similar exposure does not produce uniform trajectories of daily well-being or suicidal distress. This paper asks how comparable structural strain can generate divergent, path-dependent outcomes and why suicidal vulnerability may persist after objective conditions improve. We develop a theory-building, concept-driven framework that integrates Bourdieu’s practice theory with social and behavioural scholarship on stress, anomie, and despair, and conceptualises these dynamics as social hysteresis. The regime-based model specifies two ideal-typical response orientations through which mismatch can stabilise: an anomic regime marked by shame, withdrawal, and inwardly directed harm, and a radicalising regime marked by grievance framing, moral indignation, and organised participation, without implying violent extremism. Represented through hysteresis loops, the framework implies multistability, asymmetric switching thresholds, and scarring, providing a mechanism for persistence and non-linearity in distress trajectories. The model derives testable expectations for longitudinal panel and experience-sampling designs and suggests that prevention and intervention design should combine reductions in mismatch with relational and institutional infrastructures that facilitate regime shifts and reopen the space of possibles. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)A basic underlying assumption in most of the research to date is that intermediate industry accounts of the economies in multiregional input-output (MRIO) tables exist and are accurate. In fact, if they exist at the subnational level, such accounts are, at best, roughly estimated and predicated on far less empirical information than is available for economies of nations. Moreover, intra-economy intermediate-industry flows are typically larger than the set of a region's commodity in- and out-flows. So, if intermediate industry flows in a set of MRIO accounts are noticeably mis-estimated, it follows that interregional trade coincidentally derived using them must be even more conspicuously in error. We hypothesize as more information is used to estimate MRIO accounts, the better the estimates should be. We start our experiment by consolidating 2019 FIGARO accounts of the 27 member states of the European Union, while maintaining sectoral detail, to produce a “national account”. We then test several approaches to constructing MRIO tables. The approaches distribute interregional trade fully by receiving industry, as in FIGARO, as well as strictly in the form of a diagonalized matrix as if the commodity inflows are competitive imports. To do this, both a gravity model and RAS are applied to each approach. We then test to see how well the approaches estimate main features of FIGARO's MRIO accounts and detail a rather consistent ranking of the relative accuracy of them. We also find that the level of error inherent to the estimated MRIOs is markedly similar across approaches, particularly for multipliers. Further, relaxing interregional trade to a diagonalized matrix tends to add very little error. The approach that uses the least data is, however, markedly worse in replicating countries’ direct requirements matrices and Leontief inverses, which suggests its use in a more-limited set of applicationsItem type: Item , Artificial intelligence in the public debate: risk amplifiers and mitigators in media discourse(Ediciones Complutense, 2026-02-19) García Orosa, Berta; González Arias, Cristian Augusto; Forja Pena, Tania; Gutiérrez Caneda, Beatriz; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Ciencias da Comunicación; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)This study examines the discourse on the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Spanish digital media during the first year after the launch of ChatGPT. The study identifies the types of risk and the voices that shape the public debate based on 2,705 journalistic texts collected from six Spanish newspapers between December 2022 and November 2023. The results offer a new taxonomy based on the identification of risk objects that facilitates the development of mitigation strategies. The most frequently addressed in the media are “risks to civilization and humanity” and “risks to individuals.” The predominant voices are the media, regulators, and companies, with civil society underrepresented. The analysis reveals changes in the representation of AI risks and in the actors participating in the public debate. It is perceived that some representatives of technology companies could be promoting long-term existential risks for their own interests, diverting attention from immediate risks and hindering greater regulation of AI. Furthermore, by presenting AI as an abstract and uncontrollable force, the perception of human responsibility in its development and regulation is diluted. At the same time, other voices are emerging that minimize these risks and seek to discredit those who warn of their possible consequencesItem type: Item , Subnational MRIO building: the added value of household consumption and aggregate value-added data(Taylor & Francis, 2026-02-16) Torre Cuevas, Fernando de la; Lahr, Michael L.; Sargento, Ana Lúcia Marto; Ferreira, João Pedro; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Fundamentos da Análise Económica; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)Data scarcity makes subnational input-output accounts inaccurate. Builders of such accounts must resort to allocating output, value added, imports, and exports to regions using readily available industry-wise data, like shares of national jobs by industry. Meanwhile, population shares are typically used to allocate other final demand components. Lately, however, some statistical agencies have been releasing more subnational data. Surprisingly, builders of subnational input-output accounts do not appear to use them. This is probably due to uncertain trade-offs between the costs and benefits of deploying such data. We, therefore, explore the degree to which using some value-added and household consumption data can improve subnational multiregional input-output accounts. We find that integrating either household-consumption or some value-added data improves account accuracy little. Using both datasets in combination, however, does improve estimated accounts somewhat. Plus, together they portray rather accurate estimates of interregional income multipliers and consumption-based greenhouse gas emissionsItem type: Item , Big Data from the South(s): Beyond Data Universalism(Springer VS, Wiesbaden, 2026-02-05) Milan, Stefania; Treré, Emiliano; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Ciencias da Comunicación; Friese, Heidrun; Nolden, Marcus; Schreiter, MiriamThis chapter introduces the tenets of a theory of datafication of and in the Souths, calling for a de-Westernization of critical data studies to amend the cognitive injustice that fails to recognize non-mainstream ways of knowing the world through data. It situates the “Big Data from the South” research agenda as an epistemological, ontological, and ethical program and outlines five conceptual operations to shape it: (1) moving past “data universalism”, (2) understanding the South as a composite and plural entity, (3) critically engaging with the decolonial approach, (4) bringing agency to the core of our research; and (5) embracing the imaginaries of datafication emerging from the Souths, foregrounding empowering ways of thinking data from the margins. This section aims also to provide a forum for STS to engage with and open up to kindred currents and fields of research such as labour studies, political economy and cultural studies, thereby fostering a cross-fertilization of frameworks and empirical results to better understand what and how we, as scholars and researchers, can mobilize STS for the “good” of workers and labour institutions, within but especially beyond the thresholds of academia.Item type: Item , Community media sustainability in the UK. The case of GTFM Radio(Intellect discover, 2026-01-31) Montero Sánchez, David; Treré, Emiliano; Candón Mena, Jose; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Ciencias da Comunicación; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)Recently, the issue of community media sustainability has attracted an increasing amount of attention among media scholars worldwide. The ways in which media sustainability is being discussed in this context have changed markedly, widening the debate to encompass aspects such as participation, diversity, organizational structures, respect for the environment, technological innovation and community service. However, in the United Kingdom the evolution of the community media sector around ambiguous concepts such as ‘access’ and ‘social gain’ has shaped the sector into a neutral, non-specific area, devoid of a clearly recognizable stance in relation to commercial and public media. In turn, sustainability has centred around funding and competition for scarce resources. This article joins recent contributions in UK literature by authors such as Coleman and Padfield in calling for a clear understanding of community media as an alternative to state and market broadcasters and link community engagement and social capital to sustainability as a whole. This article takes as its point of departure an extensive literature review on the topic of community media sustainability, examining the latter as inextricably linked to its social role and proposing a multi-layered approach to the concept that incorporates areas such as technological and environmental sustainability to more traditional takes on the subject. A case-study methodology is used to engage with the experience of Welsh community radio station GTFM over a number of years. Currently covering significant areas of the Rhondda, Cynon and Taf valleys in Wales (RCT), with a potential audience of approximately 165,000 people, the case of GTFM illustrates the ways in which sustainable strategies based on cooperation, such as shared local newsrooms, a clear focus on local volunteers, collaborative approaches to fundraising or pooling technological resources, might play an integral part in the strategies used by community media to achieve sustainability.Item type: Item , All traits are functional: an evolutionary viewpoint(Elsevier, 2021-07-01) Sobral Bernal, Mª Mar; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)There is increasing confusion regarding the term ‘functional trait’ and its links with ecosystem functioning. Functional traits are defined as traits that affect individual fitness. Departamento de Xeografía; Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Instituto de Estudos e Desenvolvemento de Galicia (IDEGA)As they develop, many plants deploy shifts in antiherbivore defense allocation due to changing costs and benefits of their defensive traits. Plant defenses are known to be primed or directly induced by herbivore damage within generations and across generations by long-lasting epigenetic mechanisms. However, little is known about the differences between life stages of epigenetically inducible defensive traits across generations. To help fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a multigenerational experiment to determine whether defense induction in wild radish plants was reflected in chromatin modifications (DNA methylation); we then examined differences between seedlings and reproductive plants in current and transgenerational plasticity in chemical (glucosinolates) and physical (trichomes) defenses in this species. Herbivory triggered genome methylation both in targeted plants and their offspring. Within one generation, both defenses were highly inducible at the seedling stage, but only chemical defenses were inducible in reproductive plants. Across generations, herbivory experienced by mother plants caused strong direct induction of physical defenses in their progeny, with effects lasting from seedling to reproductive stages. For chemical defenses, however, this transgenerational induction was evident only in adults. Transgenerational priming was observed in physical and chemical defenses, particularly in adult plants. Our results show that transgenerational plasticity in plant defenses in response to herbivore offense differs for physical and chemical defense and changes across plant life stages
