Abstract
This paper presents the results of the qualitative and quantitative analysis (according to the formal structure, syntax, and semantics) of a set of utterances in direct style from a contemporary press corpus. The obtained data allow revealing: (i) the positional freedom of the introductory element, with a marked tendency to postposition; (ii) the balance between the presence or absence of the subject (with a slight tendency to its presence); and (iii) the use of a wide range of verbs belonging to three different semantic classes (verbal, mental and contextual), although those with a declarative value are predominant. These trends impact the configuration of the constructions, which can be related to the search for credibility and the writing style typical of journalistic discourse.
