Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze, from both a historic and an artistic point of view, the foundation of Santa María a Nova, a Tertiary Monastery, and Fray Alonso de Melide, its founder, during the transition between the 14th and 15th centuries. The article looks at how the preserved heritage and the social status of its benefactors, both ecclesiastical and lay, made the consolidation and survival of the convent possible. These benefactors leave bequests and donations to the convent in exchange for masses and prayers to be said for the salvation of their souls. The final destination of their bodies was a matter of great importance for them and because of this they chose this church as their place of burial. It also includes the study of the preserved heritage of the medieval monastery, some of which is of great importance. This work has allowed us to rediscover and identify the tombstone of the founder, Fray Afonso de Melide, which the Jesuits kept when they built their church in the old tertiary settlement.
