Abstract
In the redefinition of the modern male icon since the end of the nineteenth century, the progressive abandonment of chivalric ideals and the assumption of bourgeois values and ties with the nation and war is evident. For this reason, the strong and virile image of the soldier-king became a hegemonic expression of masculinity. In the case of Alfonso XIII, various aspects were important in defining him as a model of Spanish masculinity, such as the monarch’s hobbies, his family image, his humanitarian contribution during the Great War, and the colonial occupation of Morocco. Undoubtedly, imperial colonialism brought Spain closer to Europe. This was important because Spain was thought to be it on the frontier of Orientalism or Africanism.
