En 1888 se cometió un crimen en el pueblo burgalés de Nava de Roa. La atrocidad del hecho delictivo y el número de acusados llamó la atención de la prensa. Los periódicos provinciales y madrileños enviaron a sus reporteros a cubrir el juicio, pero, salvo uno, no eran expertos en Derecho.
