Abstract
Consensual non monogamies (CNM) are a range of relationship configurations beyond monogamy, which have garnered growing scholarly attention, with most of the research focused on north america and individual and psychometric approaches. This study contributes to the development of this research field with research on the spanish society’s attitudes towards three relationship configurations ( monogamy, polyamory, open relationships) from the perspective of sex normativity. This research aims to 1) ascertain if the spanish society is mainly monogamous, 2) measure social attitudes towards the three relationship configurations, and 3) ascertain if these configurations display correlations with sexual orientation and other sociodemographic variables. Via statistical analysis of secondary data from the centro de investigaciones sociológicas of 2021 and 2023, and particularly the construction of a synthetic index of attitudes towards CNM and the analysis of bivariable relationships, this study proves how the spanish society is mainly favourable to monogamy, with particularly negative and polarising views towards open relationships. Despite this, the study proves how attitudes towards polyamory became more favourable in the 2021-2023 period and how homosexual but particularly bisexual individuals have more favourable attitudes towards cnm, as established by previous research. Finally, this research also identifies how younger, progressive, and atheist and agnostic persons show in general more favourable attitudes towards CNM, proving not only the widespread nature of monogamy as a paradigm, but also the heterogeneity of attitudes towards CNM
