Abstract
The aim of this work is to offer an approach to the Calderonian dramatic production during the reign of Charles II through El segundo Escipión, a play that was barely attended by critics. Firstly, we will provide a brief outline of the Madrid courtly theatre scene during the last three decades of the 17th century through the data provided by the CATCOM database. This project will help us to position the playwright on courtly stages. Based on this contextualization, we will deal with the circumstances of composition and premiere of El segundo Escipión, of which we will clarify its scenic fortune in the light of some manuscripts: on the one hand, those that preserve the complete play and, on the other, those that gather two «loas» related to the Calderonian piece, and unknown to date, preserved in the library of the Instituto Valencia de Don Juan in Madrid.
