Abstract
Background: Emotional disorders are highly prevalent and comorbid with each other, causing remarkable suffering and resource consumption. Therefore, there has been an increased interest in investigating their etiology and maintenance, in order to develop effective treatments for these disorders. In this framework, the transdiagnostic perspective has allowed the study of the role played by different transdiagnostic processes related to psychopathology. Objective: The present review seeks to corroborate the influence of two transdiagnostic variables, experiential avoidance and emotion (dys)regulation, on the development and/or maintenance of emotional disorders. In addition, the relationship between these variables and their association with emotional symptomatology is also examined. Design: Three databases were used to identify articles between 2012 and 2025, selecting 25 publications. Results: It is corroborated that both experiential avoidance and emotion (dys)regulation influence the etiology and/or maintenance of emotional disorders. It is also shown that there is a relationship between both variables, without reaching a clear consensus on how this occurs. Conclusion: Both variables play a role in the etiology and/or maintenance of emotional disorders, although the influence of other transdiagnostic variables needs to be further investigated in order to develop optimal treatments
