Abstract
The proportion of caesarean sections at the population level allows us to estimate the level of over- or underutilisation of a community, thus being able to study its associated costs or to take stock of its results, weighing its risks against its benefits. In this study we will review the literature and present the results of this risk/benefit trade-off together with the theoretical framework that accompanies the appropriate practice of caesarean sections and their situation in Spain. MAIN OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of caesarean sections in Spain and to compare it with the recommended rates by the World Health Organization. METHODOLOGY: A literature search was conducted between September 2021 and January 2022 with a total of 28 results, from which 8 final articles were selected after the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria. RESULTS: The results achieved show the importance of following the recommendations of international committees on the use of caesarean sections, and that the figures should be kept between 10 and 15 per cent, with no more than 15 per cent in any case due to the risks and medical costs involved. CONCLUSION: The percentage of caesarean sections in Spain is well above the levels recommended by the WHO, with rates varying from 24 to 25% in recent years, demonstrating a misuse of this technique.
