Abstract
The concept of neutral Spanish continues to provoke controversy in the field of studies that focus on the behavior and nature of Spanish as a global, diverse, homogeneous and wide-ranging language in terms of its vitality and demography. Despite a succes-sion of opinions for and against such a lin-guistic reality, no satisfactory definition and characterization has been reached. Pro-gress has been made in the what for or the why of such a linguistic entity, but hardly in the what, therefore, little or inadequately in its theoretical delimitation. In this paper we intend, on the basis of studies which pro-vide the key to favor such a pretension, to place Neutral Spanish in the framework of the linguistic diasystem of Spanish, outli-ning some basic guidelines which place it in its precise place in the general organization chart of Spanish.
