Abstract
For centuries, women have been silenced protagonists in the history of music. In Galicia, this invisibility is exacerbated by the scarcity of documentation collected and analysed to date, by the lack of institutional recognition, and by the limited presence of female figures in the official accounts of music history. The exhibition Galician Opera Singers of the 19th and 20th Centuries: From Galicia to the Theatres of Europe, America and Africa – which took place at the Colexio de Fonseca between 4 October and 16 November 2024 and subsequently travelled (April–May 2025) to the Galician Centre in Lisbon – was conceived as a response to this historical omission. The event and this book, which stems from it, recover the memory and highlight the personal and professional lives of twenty-three extraordinary, enterprising, courageous women who were protagonists of international success and who, by conquering countless stages, contributed decisively to the cultural projection of Galicia far beyond its borders.
