Abstract
[ES]El concepto de célula madre tumoral se ha relacionado, en los últimos años, con un aumento de la probabilidad de desarrollar resistencia a tratamientos antitumorales convencionales. A pesar de que este concepto no revela la ascendencia de células madre tisulares, sí define las principales propiedades que caracterizan a esta población celular, autorrenovación ilimitada y capacidad de diferenciación heterogénea. Estas propiedades, junto con el elevado potencial tumorigénico y la marcada plasticidad expresada por esta población tumoral, favorecen el desarrollo de tumores potencialmente agresivos y con capacidad metastásica. Por esta razón, la comprensión de los mecanismos que median las diferentes propiedades CSC ha sido esencial para el planteamiento de diferentes estrategias terapéuticas. En esta revisión se abordarán aquellas estrategias que actualmente se encuentran en desarrollo y que representan una promesa en la erradicación de células madre tumorales
[EN]In recent years, the concept of cancer stem cell has been related to an increased likelihood of developing resistance to conventional antitumor treatments. Although this concept does not reveal the ancestry of tissue stem cells, it defines the main properties that characterize this cell population, unlimited self-renewal and heterogeneous differentiation capacity. These properties, together with the high tumorigenic potential and the marked plasticity expressed by this tumor population, favor the development of potentially aggressive tumors with metastatic capacity. For this reason, the comprehension of the mechanisms that mediate the different CSC properties has been essential for the development of different therapeutic strategies. This review will address those strategies, currently under development, that represent a promise in the eradication of cancer stem cells
