Abstract
The theoretical model of ethnolinguistic vitality developed by Giles et al. (1977) is critically applied to the Galician ethnolinguistic community. A description is given of the socio-structural factors that have shaped and altered ethnolinguistic vitality at key moments in the social history of the Galician language. The Galician case shows that not all the socio-structural factors identified by Giles et al. (1977) have the same predictive power for the probability of survival of an ethnolinguistic group as a distinct collectivity. The incorporation of Galician as a public language, more or less ritual, of the autonomous community's institutions has increased the Galician ethnolinguistic vitality. On the negative side, there has been a marked loss of Galician use between generations and a decline in urban and semi-urban areas.
