Abstract

In spite of the bibliography devoted to the revision of the literary works which deal with the African War, none of them provides a detailed analysis of the theatre. As a matter of fact, in most cases they exclusively focus on the African War itself (1859–60). Nevertheless, it is necessary to study all the plays which reproduce the different military conflicts from the second half of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century in Morocco. This is the main goal of this article. Our study will offer a bibliographical review of the main plays about the wars of Spain in Morocco, one of the most important wars in recent Spanish history, although one of the less well-known. Thus, it is necessary to remember the existence of this theatre; probably one of the theatres which bears a closer resemblance to the political and social realities lived by the playwrights themselves. This work also aims at contributing to the examination of the features of the plays, as well as the reception they had in their time. As a result, the present study can be classified both in the fields of the historiography of the theatre and the reception of the theatre.
