Abstract

This Thesis focused on the design of formulations based on ionic liquids to enhance oil recovery methods. A literature review on their application in surfactant flooding was conducted. Preliminary formulations showed promise, but ionic liquids were found to be better use to improve the performance of traditional surfactants. Several formulations were developed to enhance the application of alkyl benzene sulfonates in carbonate reservoirs. Increasing the ethoxylation degree of the ionic liquid improved high-temperature performance. Some ionic liquids were also evaluated for foam generation in CO₂ flooding, showing enhanced stability and increased mobility ratio compared to traditional surfactants. These studies provide a foundation for the application of ionic liquids in enhanced oil recovery.
