Abstract
Los títulos de Quevedo constituyen un importante escollo a la hora de editar, e incluso sólo nombrar, sus textos literarios. Las dificultades imputables al propio autor obedecen tanto a cuestiones de índole textual, por ejemplo la abundancia de poemas y textos en prosa con versiones variantes y fases redaccionales diferentes, como a los propios rasgos de los epígrafes: prolijos y densos, proclives a la alusión y la ambigüedad, se construyen con períodos plurimembres marcados por la simetría, la sinonimia, la paradoja, el oxímoron y la antítesis. A tales obstáculos intrínsecos se han sumado las libertades editoriales de impresores y editores, contemporáneos y modernos, que cambiaron, censuraron, abreviaron o confundieron incluso obras diferentes. Pero también las oscilaciones que, aunque atribuibles al propio Quevedo, fueron condicionadas por las duras invectivas y la amenaza inquisitorial de su tiempo. El presente artículo se suma a las voces de estudiosos anteriores que reclamaron mayor atención y cautela hacia los títulos quevedianos. Repasando una muestra signi cativa de casos, pretende ejempli car algunos de los principales problemas: obras y títulos con una delimitación imprecisa o errada, versiones variantes cuyo epígrafe no se ajusta al de la fase redaccional correspondiente, títulos abrevia- dos que omiten elementos nucleares del mismo o puntuaciones que no establecen una adecuada jerarquía de sus contenidos. Y apunta algunas posibles soluciones, tomando siempre en consideración el testimonio elocuente de los escasos autógrafos conservados, que evidencian la preocupación de Quevedo, siempre atento a plasmar con su pluma en el folio, con esmero y exactitud «tipográfica», la riqueza y los matices de sus títulos
Quevedo’s titles constitute a great problem when we need to edit his works or even when we only try to mention them. There are many textual obstacles, for example the abundance of poems or works in prose with different versions and phases of writing. But his titles are also long and rich, allusive and ambiguous, they are built with sentences that look for symmetry, synonymity, oxymoron, paradox or antithesis. Another problem, in his own time and today, is the editors and publish- ers’ extreme freedom: they dared with changing, censoring, abbreviating or even confusing different works. And it must be also mentioned the changes caused by invectives and censorship in the 17th century. This article intends to add new arguments to the proposals of previous scholars that demanded greater attention and care about Quevedo’s titles. Reviewing a signi cant sample of cases, it exempli es some of the main problems: works and titles with an imprecise or wrong delimitation, different versions whose titles do not correspond with that of its own phase of writing, abbreviated titles that omit nuclear elements or punctuation that does not establish a suitable hierarchy of its contents. And this article aims some possible solutions, taking always into consideration the evidences given by the few autographic manuscripts still conserved, because they show Quevedo’s worry, care and accuracy when he gave shape to his titles writing with the quill-feather on the folio
