Abstract
Smoking continues to be the leading preventable cause of disease, disability, and premature death worldwide. Since the characteristics of the young adult smoking population are usually poorly described in the literature, the aim of this study is to analyse and describe the smoking characteristics of this sector of the population and to examine their opinion on mobile applications for smoking cessation and perceived barriers to their use. A survey study was conducted with a sample of 94 participants aged 18-25 years (61.7% female). The main results show that young adults who smoke have a low dependence on tobacco, a large proportion of them live with smokers and some of them consider that mobile applications for smoking cessation should be combined with professional support. These findings have theoretical and practical implications, highlighting the need to develop psychological smoking cessation interventions tailored specifically to young smokers to increase the likelihood of early smoking cessation, which could prevent the escalation and maintenance of smoking in later adulthood and its subsequent health consequences
