Abstract
The text proposes to analyze the contemporary rise of the far-right through a Lacanian-oriented psychoanalytic study of hate. It first explains Jacques Lacan’s distinction between the passions of being (love, ignorance, and hate) and the passions of the soul (joy, sadness). A distinction is then drawn between racism as a phenomenon linked to the register of the Imaginary, and hate as pointing towards the Lacanian concept of the Real. Finally, hate is characterized as the hatred of a different mode of jouissance, as hatred of Otherness, and as hatred of the other who is believed to obstruct social wholeness.
