O tecno-otimismo na transição energética através da crónica duma polémica científica

Abstract

O establishment científico está impregnado com a ingênua crença de que os avanços científicos podem resolver a crise ambiental e climática que a humanidade enfrenta. Esse tecno-otimismo legitima a superexploração dos recursos da Terra, ao mesmo tempo em que oferece a esperança dum futuro melhor, no qual a inovação resolverá os problemas ambientais que, atualmente, consideramos consequências aceitáveis das tecnologias humanas. Em relação à emergência climática, o otimismo tecnológico adormece nosso senso de urgência para realizar mudanças sistêmicas profundas, enquanto desvia a atenção com promessas de simples soluções tecnológicas. Esta contribuição pretende explorar o tecno-otimismo na ciência através duma polémica surgida após a publicação dum artigo de Megan Seibert e William Rees na revista Energies no ano 2021, que criticava a postura maioritária arredor da transição energética como uma panaceia e desembocou na publicação de dous comentários extremamente críticos na mesma revista, assi como a publicação duma nota do editor-chefe da revista justificando as críticas recebidas. Este intercambio dialético entre posturas contrapostas e, a priori, irreconciliáveis oferece a oportunidade de analisar as posições antagónicas dos investigadores no campo das energias renováveis.

The scientific establishment is imbued with the naive belief that scientific advancements can solve the environmental and climate crisis that humanity is facing. This techno-optimism legitimizes the overexploitation of Earth’s resources, while simultaneously offering the hope of a better future in which innovation will solve the environmental problems that we currently consider acceptable consequences of human technologies. Regarding climate emergency, the technological optimism dulls our sense of urgency to implement profound systemic changes, while diverting attention with promises of mere technological solutions. This contribution aims to explore techno-optimism in science through a controversy that arose after a publication by Megan Seibert and William Rees in the journal Energies in 2021, which criticized the majority stance around the energy transition as a panacea and led to the publication of two extremely critical comments in the same journal, as well as a note from the editor-in-chief justifying the received criticism. This dialectical exchange between opposing and, at first glance, irreconcilable positions offer an opportunity to analyze the antagonistic stances of researchers in the field of renewable energy.
