Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze two passages of Isidore of Seville's Etymologies (8,7, 1-11; 1,40, 3-6) which deal with the nature and the role of the poet, so much as with the discussion about the concept of fabula, deeply concemed with him. Although Isidore's vision is the result of the combination of diverse sources, it shows however a certain coherence: the poet is seen as the transmitter of a basic truth under the cover of fabula, which is the resource that allows him to dress his message in a beautiful and attractive way
