Mercury (Hg) is a toxic heavy-metal element widely known for its different historical applications such as the mining of precious metals, which also constitutes an environmental pollutant worldwide. Its physicochemical properties allow it to experience a series of biogeochemical processes from which, through the participation of aquatic microbiota, different derived species are produced, among which methylmercury (MeHg+) stands out. It is a potent neurotoxicant that can pose a risk to those who expose themselves to it through the consumption of contaminated marine species. Methylmercury can exert its toxicity in distinct parts of the human being; however, the central nervous system is particularly susceptible to its effects. A wide collection of molecular and cellular alterations such as oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, glutamate and Ca2+ dishomeostase, epigenetic alterations or cell apoptosis are included among the main effects after neurological exposure to methylmercury. In this thesis, both an analysis of the aspects related to the biogeochemical cycle of Hg and a study of the cellular and molecular effects of MeHg+ , indicating affected cell types and prevalent cellular toxic mechanisms will be made.es_ES
