Abstract
[ESP]
[ENG] We introduce a new hyerarquical classification of native forests existing in Galice (NW Spain) based in ecological, structural, floristic and biogeographical criteria. For this purpose, a database was setted up based on more than 3.000 references (floristic relevès) taken along Galice and the vicinity of Asturias, Castilla-León and the North of Portugal. As a result, 93 types of native forests were recognized. For each one, characteristic vascular plants by structural levels (canopy and understory), topo-edaphic and bioclimatic conditions, biogeographical distribution, correspondence with habitat types of Annex I of the 92/43/EEC Directive, EUNIS Habitat Classification and European Forest Types Classification and phytosociological support (if available) are given. A number of the woodland types described have no correspondence neither with the habitat types listed in Annex I of the Habitats Directive nor the other two classifications checked. Despite of the progressive increase in the knowledge of the great variety of forests recognized in the studied area along the last decades, it remains unknown to local population and it is not incorporated into the contents and targets of primary and secondary educative levels. For this, many efforts are needed to increase the social awakening on the importance of preserve the native forests at regional level.
