Abstract
This study outlines the route of the first section of the Via Augusta from the ancient city of Gades to Hispalis. To this end, pre-existing data have been reviewed and reanalyzed, while new materials have been incorporated to enhance our understanding of this important Roman road infrastructure. The research is based on an extensive field survey, complemented by a detailed analysis of current cartography and the application of advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools, as well as the use of orthophotography and remote sensing techniques. This methodology has made it possible to accurately describe the road’s trajectory and characteristics. Furthermore, key aspects are examined, including its state of preservation, the modifications it has undergone over time, and the existence of secondary branches that may have connected it to other routes within the Roman road network.
