RT Journal Article T1 Aspects of the relationship bewteen theories of grammar and theories of processing A1 Acuña Fariña, Juan Carlos K1 Linguistics K1 Psycholinguistics K1 Language processing K1 Empty categories K1 Perception predicates K1 Apposition AB The aim of this paper is to analyze the pros and cons of the relationship between theories ofgrammar and psycholinguistic research conducted in laboratories. It is argued that currentoptimism about the benefits that psycholinguistic research may bring to those interested inthe nature of language may be hard to reconcile with the difficulties there are in synchronisingthe research agendas of linguistics and psycholinguistics. The main appeal of psycholinguisticresearch lies in its superior testability standards. Through a brief examination of the simplenotion of apposition, it is argued that linguistics is indeed irremediably circular andinconclusive, and that that is why some look to experimental research in language as a way ofcircumventing the endemic weakness of grammatical theories. However, psycholinguistscannot avoid a dependence on syntactic descriptions in order to formulate their ownpredictions. This makes for more undesired circularity. Finally, the paper seeks to show thatat least some experiments can shed light on grammatical structure. A key issue will be toponder how psycholinguistic tools can help us meet the challenge of psychological adequacy PB Asociación Española de Estudios Anglo-Norteamericanos SN 0210-6124 YR 2005 FD 2005 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10347/23097 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10347/23097 LA eng NO Acuña Fariña, J.
