AB This thesis covers most of my research from 2007 to 2013 asa member of the High Energy Physics group in the ParticlePhysics department at the University of Santiago deCompostela. Most of this work was performed on the LHCbexperiment. At  rst, I was involved in the installationand commissioning of the Silicon Tracker (ST) detector.The ST is a silicon micro-strip detector which provides precise momentummeasurements of ionizing particles coming from the collisions. Afterwards I joinedthe VErtex LOcator (VELO) upgrade project in the research and development ofnew sensor technologies for the LHCb upgrade.
