RT Journal Article T1 The importance of interlinguistic similarity and stable bilingualism when two languages compete A1 Mira Pérez, Jorge A1 Seoane, Luis F. A1 Nieto Roig, Juan José AB One approach for analyzing the dynamics of two languages incompetition is to fit historical data for the number of speakers of each with amathematical model in which the parameters are interpreted as the similaritybetween those languages and their relative status. Within this approach, on thebasis of a detailed analysis and extensive calculations, we show the outcomes thatcan emerge for given values of these parameters. In contrast to previous results,it is possible that in the long term both languages may coexist and survive. Thishappens only where there is a stable bilingual group, and this is possible only ifthe competing languages are sufficiently similar, in which case its occurrence isfavoured by both similarity and status symmetry PB IOP Publishing YR 2011 FD 2011 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10347/18409 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10347/18409 LA eng NO Mira, J., Seoane, L., & Nieto, J.
