AB En el presente artículo se propone una reflexión desde una perspectiva antropológica de los cambios que ha experimentado la concepción de la muerte y los rituales funerarios en la sociedad occidental actual. Para ello se analizarán los principales rasgos que definen la religiosidad y el pensamiento simbólico de sus habitantes y se describirá un caso de estudio concreto: el de la sociedad rural gallega. El resultado final nos llevará a concluir que, ante una sociedad que camina hacia la deshumanización, se hace imprescindible ahondar en lo simbólico para poder afrontar con éxito realidades existenciales como la muerte
AB In this essay, we propose ananalysis of the death conceptionand funerary practices in thecurrent Western society from ananthropological perspective. For thispurpose, we will study the religiosityand the symbolic thought of thesemembers and we will describe theconcrete case of the Galician ruralsociety. In conclusion, we drawattention on the need to revaluethe symbolic thought next to thedehumanization of the modern society
