AB Desde hace ya unos años, la figura de Estacio estásiendo objeto de una constante rehabilitación. Ello,sin embargo, no ha tenido como contrapartida unamejor comprensión del aparato divino de la Tebaidani, concretamente, de las incoherencias (o indecisiones)en que Júpiter incurre a la hora de definirsu relación con el fatum. Obviando el hecho de queel estatuto ontológico y teológico de Zeus-Júpiteres altamente inestable desde el momento fundacionaldel género épico, hay una tendencia claraa seguir apelando hoy día a la similitud que estepadre de los dioses guarda con la Providencia estoicaque, casi aporéticamente, semper paret, semeliussit (Sen., Dial. I 5.8.9). En el presente estudio,plantearemos como alternativa a esta perspectivael estudio de ciertos pasajes de Ovidio y del Sénecapensador político, no teólogo. Veremos cómoel Júpiter estaciano guarda inopinadas similitudescon el ovidiano rector Olympi y con el senecanociuitatis rector.
AB Statius is receiving a much more positive approachesnowadays than years ago. They are reallycontributing to his recent rehabilitation. However,this new situation has not meant in practice a betterunderstanding of the Thebaid’s divine machine.More concretely, Jupiter’s hesitations about his relationshipwith fatum are still considered narrativeincoherences. Obviously enough, the ontologicaland theological status of Zeus-Jupiter was profoundlyunstable throughout the whole of Greekand Roman literary tradition. Even so, classicalscholarship still try to explain the Statian Jupiterin the light of the Stoic Providence that, almostaporeticly, semper paret, semel iussit (Sen., Dial. I5.8.9). In this paper I shall bring up some Ovidianand Senecan passages, but I shall not appeal to thetheologian Seneca, but to the political thinker. Ihope to show that Thebaid’ Jupiter bears strong resemblancesto Ovidian rector Olympi and to Senecanciuitatis rector.
