RT Journal Article T1 Controlling eutrophication by means of water recirculation: An optimal control perspective A1 Fernández Fernández, Francisco Javier A1 Martínez Varela, Áurea María A1 Álvarez Vázquez, Lino José K1 Optimal control K1 Numerical optimization K1 Artificial recirculation K1 Eutrophication AB In this work, the artificial recirculation of water is presented and analyzed, from the perspective of the optimal control of partial differential equations, as a tool to prevent eutrophication effects in large waterbodies. A novel formulation of the environmental problem, based on the coupling of nonlinear models for hydrodynamics, water temperature and concentrations of the different species involved in the eutrophication processes, is introduced. After a complete and rigorous analysis of the existence of optimal solutions, a full numerical algorithm for their computation is proposed. Finally, some numerical results for a realistic scenario are shown, in order to prove the efficiency of our approach PB Elsevier YR 2022 FD 2022 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10347/29384 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10347/29384 LA eng NO Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics 421 (2023) 114886 NO The authors would like to thank the anonymous referees for their interesting comments, suggestions and corrections, as they have greatly contributed to improve the quality of the manuscript.
