The present work was conducted to study therelationships among blood indicators of lipomobilization andhepatic function in high-yielding dairy cows. Two groups ofHolstein cows were studied: 27 early lactation cows and 14mid lactation cows from four different herds with similarhusbandry characteristics in Galicia, Spain. Blood sampleswere obtained to measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB),non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides (TG), andthe activity of aspartate transaminase (AST) andgamma-glutamyl transferase. Cows in early lactation hadhigher levels of BHB and NEFA than mid lactation cows.High lipomobilization (NEFA > 400 μmol/L) was detectedin 67% and 7% of early lactation and mid lactation cows, respectively, while subclinical ketosis (BHB > 1.2 mmol/L)was detected in 41% and 28% of the early lactation andlactation cows, respectively. TG concentrations were lowin all cows suffering subclinical ketosis and in 61% of thecows with high lipomobilization. During early lactation,30% of cows suffered hepatic lipidosis as detected bylevels of AST. Compromised hepatic function wasobserved in early lactation cows as shown by lowerconcentrations of glucose, total protein, and urea PB Korean Society of Veterinary Science SN 1229-845X YR 2011 FD 2011 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10347/22447 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10347/22447 LA eng NO Díaz González, F.H., Muíño Otero, R., Pereira Lestayo, V., Campos Gaona, R. y Benedito Castellote, J.L.
