AB El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre destinos turísticos neogénicos surgidos a partir de motivaciones diferentes. En concreto focalizamos el trabajo en dos localidades ibéricas seleccionadas como representativas del turismo religioso y de sol y playa: Fátima y Benidorm. Los argumentos que desarrollamos insisten en la idea de que la aparición y evolución de estos destinos no es neutra desde el punto de vista geográfico. Del mismo modo existen coincidencias a la hora de entender su estructura urbana si bien es cierto que hay algunas variables, como el diferente grado de madurez de los núcleos, que acentúan las diferencias. No se trata de un estudio comparativo entre dos destinos turísticos. Más bien lo que se pretende es confrontar dos modelos que frecuentemente se consideran opuestos hasta el punto de llegar a dudarse del carácter turístico de los peregrinos entendidos como viajeros con una profunda motivación religiosa. Si es cierto que el turismo crea formas particulares de espacio social también se debería pensar en su capacidad para generar formas particulares de espacio geográfico independientemente de la razón que justifica el viaje turístico.
AB The aim of this article is to reflect on neogenic tourist destinations arising from different motivations. In particular, we focus on two representative Iberian locations which have been selected for religious travel and sun and beach tourism: Fatima and Benidorm. The developing arguments stress the idea that the emergence and evolution of these destinations is not neutral from a geographical point of view. Similarly, there are coincidences in understanding their urban structure, although there are some variables such as the different maturity grade of the nuclei, which accentuates the differences. This is not a comparative study between two tourist destinations. Rather, it is intended to debate two models which are often seen as opposites and reach a point where doubt is cast on the pilgrims’ tourist character because they are understood as travellers with deep religious motivation. If it is true that tourism creates particular forms of social space, then its ability to generate particular forms of geographic space, regardless of the reason behind a tourist’s trip, should also be considered.
