RT Dissertation/Thesis T1 Improving Osteoarthritis Therapy through the design of Intra-articular Drug Delivery Systems engineered with Artificial Intelligence Tools A1 Martínez Borrajo, Rebeca K1 nanoparticles K1 microspheres K1 DMOADs K1 Osteoarthritis AB This thesis highlights the crucial role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools indesigning, developing, and optimizing novel formulations with potential asdisease modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs). In this regard, AI toolsenabled the establishment of robust protocols to prepare nanoparticles andmicrospheres of specific desired characteristics. The drug delivery systemsdeveloped in this thesis demonstrated its potential as DMOADs by targeting thetwo main hallmarks of OA: inflammation and cartilage degradation. Thisapproach is achieved by following three independent but closely related strategies;inflammation control, macrophage phenotype modulation and reversing diseaseprogression by modulating chondrocyte senescence. The use of AI tools waspivotal in achieving these advancements, offering innovative methodologies thatsurpassed traditional approaches in drug delivery systems design.
