AB En el Antiguo Testamento se narran historias sobre hombres y mujeres fuertes que fueron capaces de derrotar a grandes enemigos siempre por medio de la gracia divina; este es el caso de Judit. Conocemos a esta heroína gracias al Libro de Judit, el cual es un texto apócrifo de origen hebrero escrito probablemente a finales del siglo II a.C.El libro narra las grandes hazañas de Judit, la cual por medio de su fe y su valor, logra acabar con el asedio que sufre su pueblo, Betulia, por las amenazas del general Holofernes.La historia de Judit y Holofernes va a ser una de las más representadas a lo largo de la Historia del Arte. La escena más relevante y la que más van a repetir los grandes artistas será la de Judit cortándole la cabeza al general de la que poseemos numerosos ejemplos a lo largo del medievo. Pero también conocemos grandes obras de Donatello, Caravaggio o incluso artistas contemporáneos como Klimt, que muestran a Judit dentro de una visión que difiere de la medieval. No obstante, cabe destacar que estas representaciones van a tener un punto de partida: la Edad Media, donde la historia de Judit se desarrolla fundamentalmente en representaciones miniadas frente a las obras posteriores que la recogen en manifestaciones de gran formato.

We know this heroine from the Book of Judith, which is an apocryphal Hebrew text probably written at the end of the 2nd century BC.The book narrates the great deeds of Judith, who, through her faith and courage, manages to put an end to the siege of her town, Bethulia, by the threats of General Holofernes.The story of Judith and Holofernes is one of the most frequently depicted in the history of art. The most important scene, and the one most often repeated by the great artists, is that of Judith cutting off the general's head, of which we have numerous examples throughout the Middle Ages. But we also know great works by Donatello, Caravaggio or even contemporary artists such as Klimt, who show Judith in a vision that differs from the medieval one. However, it should be noted that these representations will have a starting point: the Middle Ages, where the story of Judith is developed mainly in miniature representations, as opposed to the later works that depict her in large-format representations.
