This session offered an excellentopportunity to assess the state and progress of alpine ecologyin this region, identify knowledge gaps, and discuss furtherdirections for research. Iberian alpine ecosystems arebiodiversity hotspots and have traditionally contributed tosustaining rural livelihoods. Today, these ecosystems aresubjected to large changes in land uses, including landabandonment, and are affected by climate change. This articlereviews the current state of Iberian alpine ecology andproposes a research agenda. Alpine ecology in the IberianPeninsula is a growing field of research. The need for largerspatial and temporal scales in research and monitoring, alongwith the integration of socioecological aspects, is a criticalissue for understanding the major drivers of change in thealpine ecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula. Theimplementation of effective mitigation strategies aimed atreducing the impact of the pressing environmental andsocioeconomic problems of Iberian mountain areas can onlybe accomplished through a multidisciplinary and integrativeapproach.
