However, given their susceptibility to degradation and limited capacity to overcome biological barriers new delivery technologies had to be developed for them to reach their targets. This review aims at analyzing the historical seminal advances that shaped the development of the protein/peptide delivery field, along with the emerging technologies on the lead of the current landscape. Particularly, focus is made on technologies with a potential for transmucosal systemic delivery of protein/peptide drugs, followed by approaches for the delivery of antigens as new vaccination strategies, and formulations of biological drugs in oncology, with special emphasis on mAbs. Finally, a discussion of the key challenges the field is facing, along with an overview of prospective advances are provided PB Elsevier YR 2021 FD 2021 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10347/27687 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10347/27687 LA eng NO Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews 176 (2021) 113899. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.addr.2021.113899 NO This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (Ref.SAF2017-86634-R), the government of Xunta de Galicia (Competitive Reference Groups, Ref:ED431C2017/09), and MINECO- PCIN-2017-129/ AEI, under the frame of EuroNanoMed III.
