RT Dissertation/Thesis T1 Atropine-loaded contact lenses for myopia control: design and preclinical evaluation A1 García del Valle, Inés Ángela K1 myopia K1 atropine K1 hydrogel K1 medicated contact lenses K1 controlled release AB Myopia is a global public health priority due to its increasingprevalence in children. This PhD Thesis was aimed to thedesign of contact lenses (CLs) that load and elutetherapeutically relevant amounts of atropine for a dual physicaland pharmacological intervention. Functional monomers ofdifferent nature were combined at specific ratios to modulatethe amounts of drug loaded and to achieve sustained release. The preclinical evaluation of atropine-loaded CLs included invivo models to assess ocular tissue distribution and penetrationto the posterior segment. Parameters of the synthesizedhydrogels related to CLs comfort and wearability werecharacterized, including oxygen permeability. The findingssupport the possibility of obtaining dual prospectiveinterventions for the control of myopia progression.
