RT Dissertation/Thesis T1 Design and formulation of nanocarriers for the treatment of diabetic eye diseases A1 Kattar, Axel K1 Epalrestat K1 diabetes K1 eye K1 niosome K1 oleogel AB The eye is a crucial organ that allows us to experience the world visually, and the loss of vision is a fear for many. One significant threat to eye healthis diabetic retinopathy, which can result in consequences as severe asblindness if left untreated. Current treatments for diabetic retinopathyinvolve injections and laser exposure, but they only slow down thedegeneration of the retina. Therefore, there exists a need for preventivetreatments to protect patients' vision. One potential solution is the use of asmall molecule called epalrestat, which can block a metabolic pathwayinvolved in the development of diabetic retinopathy. To enhance the deliveryof epalrestat to the eye, drug carriers have been investigated. Niosomes andoleogels were formulated, characterized, and tested in various modelsincluding ex vivo, in ovo, and in vivo assays. The self-assembly process ofthe niosomes was investigated with the help of a monolayer model. Thesecarriers provided a saf e and e:fficient way to help with the transport ofepalrestat across the various ocular barriers.
