RT Dissertation/Thesis T1 Improvement of chemical enhanced oil recovery methods A1 Tafur Angulo, Néstor Alberto K1 EOR K1 Viscous fingering K1 Ionic liquid K1 Smart water AB In the midst of the imperative transition towards ecologicalsustainability, the role of oil as a vital energy resource isundeniable. This Thesis tackles the challenge of amplifying the oilrecovery potential of Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) techniquesapplied in oil reservoirs, especially of carbonate rocks, to optimizeoil extraction from existing reservoirs. The research exploresthree chemical EOR method approaches: the control of unstabledisplacement (viscous ingering), reduction of interfacial tension(IFT), and alteration of rock wettability. The study on controllingviscous ingering via chemical reactions was methodicallyconducted through numerical simulations. Afterward, advancedformulations employing surfactants and ionic liquid blends wereexamined for EOR applications by reducing IFT to low values.Several ionic liquids were evaluated to improve the rockwettability alteration properties of smart water at lowtemperatures. The results obtained in this work show promisingtechniques to move beyond known oil recovery methods, balancing today's demands with the imperatives of tomorrow.
