RT Dissertation/Thesis T1 Oscar Wilde, the Short Story Writer A1 Martínez Ponciano, Regina K1 Oscar Wilde K1 short story K1 short fiction K1 liminality K1 monsters AB This doctoral dissertation aims to validate Oscar Wilde as ashort story writer in the fullest extent of the expression. Thethirteen narratives of The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888),Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and Other Stories (1891), andA House of Pomegranates (1891) demonstrate that Wilde wasnot just writing stories that were short: they display aprofound awareness of and playful attitude toward theaffordances of the short story form and the late Victorianpublishing industry. This aim is achieved through a combinationof 1) a critical literature review, 2) evidence-basedreconstructions of collections' histories and (con)texts, and 3)analyses of the liminality in and of three selected shortstories: “The Selfish Giant”, “The Canterville Ghost”, “TheBirthday of the Infanta".
