Abstract
The Spanish dairy cattle sector is strategic, producing over 7 million tons of milk annually and accounting for about 5 percent of EU production. It is crucial for the livelihoods of many families, with Galicia as the leading production region. However, the sector faces significant challenges, including herd reduction, rural depopulation, and its role in methane emissions, which are a focus of national climate strategies. Approximately half of the sector’s emissions arise from fertilizers and soil management, and the remainder from enteric fermentation and manure management. Nutritional strategies to reduce enteric fermentation are among the key mitigation measures.
