Abstract
This study focuses on the morphodynamics of coídos - shingle or boulder beaches in Galician - as well as on the analysis of the type and distribution of associated vegetation, within the framework of its classification as a Habitat Type of Community Interest “1220: Perennial vegetation of shingle beaches”, as established by the Habitats Directive and applied here to the area of the SAC “Monte and Lagoa de Louro”. The general aim is to determine the existence of this habitat type along the Galician coast and to characterize several of its parameters. To carry out the study, various procedures were employed using a diverse methodology. Orthophotos were used, as well as field topographic data collected with a GNSS receiver and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), along with data on the morphometry and lithology of the beach clasts. From these resources, a detailed map of the lithology of the rocky intertidal platform was produced, along with a comparison of topographic changes in the beaches between two years based on cross-shore profiles, a characterization of vegetation according to its cross-shore distribution, a comparison of photographs between the winter and spring months, and a morphological and lithological classification of the shingle blocks. The results confirm that in the SAC “Monte and Lagoa de Louro” Habitat 1220 is well represented, both in terms of morphodynamic characterization and by the presence of the indicator species Crithmum maritimum. This species is highly restricted to the upper part of the shingle beach, as the lower part is affected by the high mobility of clasts caused by wave action and the lack of fine sediment capable of retaining and providing the necessary nutrients for vegetation stabilization.
