La historia rural, ayer y hoy

Abstract

La historia rural presenta tradiciones y trayectorias distintas en los diferentes países de Europa Occidental. En Inglaterra se ha mantenido desde mediados del XX a la actualidad como una vigorosa corriente, cultivada por numerosos y destacados especialistas, fruto de cuyo trabajo es la Agrarian History of England and Wales. En Italia, también desde el ecuador del siglo pasado, los ruralistas prestaron gran atención a los sistemas agrarios, pero sobre todo a las condiciones medioambientales y sociales en las que se desarrolla el cultivo de las tierras. En Francia, y en buena medida en España, la Historia Rural tomó cuerpo en forma de monografías regionales, que con planteamientos estructurales y propósitos de totalidad, abordaban la demografía, economía y sociedad de un territorio limitado. Este modo de abordar los problemas se fue abandonando en las décadas de 1980 y 1990, lo que no signifi ca que el mundo rural haya dejado de atraer la atención de los investigadores. Los graves problemas medioambientales y ecológicos actuales al lado de otros factores, acrecientan el interés por conocer las formas de vida desaparecidas abruptamente desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial

Rural History has different traditions in the various countries of Western Europe. In England it is considered a vigorous research tendency, developed by many experts, since the middle of the 20th century and the great work Agrarian History of England and Wales is the result of their collective labours. In Italy, experts in Rural History have showed great interest in the study of the agrarian systems and, above all, in the social and environmental conditions of the cultivated land. In France, and in Spain to a great extent, Rural History took shape as ambitions regional monographs that dealt with the demography, economy and society of specifi c geographic areas. This way of carrying out the study of those farming systems together with its society gradually was given up during the 1980-1990 decades, as other approaches and subjects took advantage of the structural History’s crisis. However, it doesn’t mean that rural work doesn’t attract the researchers: environment’s serious problems of these days, together with other factors, have reassessed missing ways of life at the time that they act as a stimulus to the study of the rural economy, the role of the local communities, the environmental conditions and the rural civilization
