Abstract
magnética global no material.
The existing CuO2 planes in the rare-earth cuprates R2CuO4 are presented as a physical implementation of a two-dimensional magnetic system with short range interactions. The existence of a weak ferromagnetic component in the compound Gd2 Cu O 4, created by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, is used as a property to betray the presence of a phase transition from two to three dimensions in the compound, in order to study size effects on the twodimensional magnetism of these planes. It is observed that a size reduction of the system implies the depression of that phase transition temperature, up to the total elimination of the global magnetic order in the material. The observed size dependence demonstrates that a two-dimensional Heisenberg model is not valid to describe these systems
